Abstract Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is a new method to detect the trace gas dissolved in the transformer oil.It utilizes the measurement of the electromagnetic energy absorbed by the transformer oil by means of acoustic detection.The PAS is characterized by high sensitivity,wide detective range,good selectivity and maintenance free.In this paper,the principle of PAS used for dissolved gas detection in transformer oil has been introduced first.Then the absorption spectral has been analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.A dissolved gas detection system consisting of a dynamic headspace degasses and the trace gas meter with PAS has been built.Field test has also been conducted and the improvements have been made considering the effect of internal noise,environmental temperature and humidity.Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of trace gas detection is well with the national and IEC standards.
