Abstract An improved saturated core type high temperature superconducting(HTS) fault current limiter is developed in this paper. The model of current-limiting device consists of an AC primary superconducting coil and a DC secondary superconducting coil. When normal operating,iron yokes are saturated by a single DC current in high temperature superconducting coil and no current limiting mode occurs. And at the time of fault,the fault current limiting capability decreases depending on the DC current in DC superconducting winding. An idea is to turn the IGBT2 off and puts a resistor in series with the AC superconducting coil for absorbing the incoming energy into the AC coil,and turn the IGBT1 off to disconnect the DC voltage source from the DC high temperature superconducting coil in order to control the fault current in a pre-set region.The operating principle of the new fault current limiter is discussed,and the effect of parameters variety of high temperature superconducting fault current limiter is analyzed on limiting fault current. The simulation and experimental results show that the waveform distortion of normal alternating current decreases and the harmonics is suppressed by the device,and the device is of good limiting and re-closing capability,and demonstrates that the device can reduce both the steady-state and the transient fault current significantly. The device is of great benefit to improve transient stability and enhance the electrical energy quality of power system.
