Abstract Contamination level and icing weight are the main factors for the decreasing of icing flashover voltage, therefore, effective prediction of the contamination level and icing weight is an important approach to the prevention of icing flashover accidents. Firstly, a large number of artificial icing tests, which simulate the impact of contamination level and icing weight on leakage current, are investigated. Three characteristics of the LC, namely the maximum pulse amplitude (Ih), total harmonic distortion (THD) and the accumulative charge (Q), are extracted. They reflect jointly how severe the contamination level and icing weight of insulators are from different perspectives. Thirdly, the regression equation between the three characteristics and the contamination level, icing weight, are obtained. Finally, base on the relationship among them, the ISP prediction model is presented, in which the three characteristics are used as the inputs of model, and the ISP is used as the output of model. It can be seen from the comparison between prediction results and test results that the absolute values of the relative errors are less than 8.5%. Therefore, the prediction model is valid and reliable to predict the ISP of insulators and it can provide reliable references for the selection and design of the external insulation of transmission line and is of significance for the prevention of icing flashover accidents.
