Abstract The end electrical field and its influencing factors of a helical-channel magnetohy- drodynamic thruster are studied in this paper. Based on the inner Joule heating loss, four dimensionless factors are defined to quantify the end electrical field. Then the influence of the end electrical field on the performance characteristics of a helical-channel magnetohydrodynamic thruster is discussed. And then the influence of the flow field, applied electrical voltage, pitch of the helical wall and structure of flow guide and rectifier on the end electrical field is investigated. And some valuable results are obtained. The proposed approach and results can be used in the optimization and design of a helical-channel magnetohydrodynamic thruster.
