Abstract High efficiency output power adjustment is one of the key issues for inductively coupled power transfer(ICPT) system. Principle as well as characteristics of four basic output power adjustment methods - pulse amplitude modulation(PAM), pulse frequency modulation(PFM), phase-shifted control (PSC), and energy injection control(EIC) are analyzed and compared. According to the feature of PSC that system output power is regulated by shifting phase of inverter, a novel output power adjustment method by harmonic based phase-shifted control(HPSC) is proposed. The phase-shifted angle and reasonable operation range of different harmonics in HPSC are derived. The harmonic of inverter output voltage is used in power transfer instead of fundamental, which can decrease switching frequency for the same output power. The feasibility of the proposed method was verified by experimental results taking third harmonic for example.
