Abstract Model predictive control (MPC) is a novel control algorithm developed in recent years. MPC can achieve a satisfying control performance with lower model parameters dependency and has been widely applied in process control systems. MPC can predict the future state variables of the controlled object based on the current and past information, and an optimal command can be obtained according to the expected values of the controlled objects and the vary of the command. In this paper, MPC is applied in the current control for the high performance AC motor control system to solve the problem of high parameters dependency in traditional PI controller. A novel generic current controller based on model predictive control algorithm is designed which can be used in the control of all kinds AC motors. Experimental results show that the MPC controller has a very good performance and is very robust to the model parameters. So MPC can be applied in motor control systems instead of the traditional PI controllers.
