Abstract It is recognized that the traditional power theory is no longer applicable under the non-sinusoidal situations. Many proposals of power theory and many suggested definitions of power properties(power phenomena) exist in the scientific literature.However, a common understanding hasn’t been reached on the interpretation and application both in mathematics and physics. In this paper, the historic development of power theories is summarized, and some definitions of power elements, which are the basis core issues of power theory, are comparably analyzed. With elaborating several representative theories, the contentions and challenges are discussed. Finally, the paper summarizes the author’s understanding and perspectives in order to arouse the reader's thinking and discussion.
