Abstract This paper presents a determination methodology for energy storage system capacity used for autonomous microgrid. The two time parameters included in the configuration process are T1 defined as microgrid maximum permission off-grid operation time,T2 defined as expected operation time with failure of microgrid. Based on the variation of unbalanced energy—difference between generation and load, along with the time parameters, the method is presented in order that Energy Storage system can supply the maximum insufficient energy and absorb the surplus maximum energy The proposed method is simple and convenient to use without demanding much time domain simulation. The novel method has been applied to calculate the minimum sizing of Energy Storage system which used to improve the stability of microgrid. The illustrative example using the proposed method demonstrated the correctness and validity.
