Abstract In a permanent magnet (PM) motor, a strong electromagnetic attracting force exists between the rotor magnets and the stator teeth. It causes the mechanical deformation and vibration of stator. In the paper, the electromagnetic vibration of PM motor with different slot/pole number combinations, such as 9/6, 18/6, 12/8, 24/8, 12/10, 15/10, is investigated. The electromagnetic forces of these motors at different rotor positions are calculated using 2D finite element method, and transferred to the structure transient finite element model. The corresponding vibration spectrum can be predicted. It is verified by experimental results. The simulated vibration spectrums of PM motors with the different slot/pole number combinations are analyzed and compared. The presented method is also used to design low-noise PM motors.
