Optimization for the Slot Opening to Reduce Cogging Torque in High-Power BLDC in Electric Vehicles |

Abstract The cogging torque in high-power BLDC drives could seriously affect the performance of electric vehicles. In this paper,response surface methodology(RSM) is used to optimize the angular shifts and the width of slot opening to reduce the cogging torque without deteriorating the trapezoidal shape of back-EMF,thereby improving the performance of electric vehicles. Taking a 30kW BLDC with 4 pole and 12 slots as the study subject,this paper achieves the mathematical model between cogging torque and angular shifts of slot opening as well as slot opening width by using experimental design(DOE) method,and then calculates the optimum combination of the angular shifts and the width of slot opening which makes the cogging torque minimum. Finally,the finite element method (FEM) is used to examine the accuracy of the results. The results show that the cogging torque is effectively reduced by about 87.6%. Moreover,the simulation shows the quality of back-EMF shape.
