Abstract whether there is current at non-commutation duration when the energized phase of brushless DC turns into floating phase affects the motor’s operating performance greatly. Based on the working principle of brushless DC motors, This paper presents a simplified equivalent model for brushless DC motors, and reveals the conditions and calculation equation when current is generated in the floating phase of brushless DC motors. It puts forward the law of generated current in the floating phase in different pulse-width modulations, and conducts experiments to verify it. The result shows that the floating phase generates current only when the back electromotive force of floating phase is below zero, the high side switch is the PWM, and the low side switch is on; or when the back electromotive force of floating phase is above zero, the high side switch is on, and the low side switch is the PWM.
