Abstract Fixed-pitch variable-speed wind turbines have good prospects in small and medium scale wind power market due to its advantages of simple structure, low cost and high reliability. However, the system control, especially the constant power control in high wind velocity regime is hard to realize and rarely reported in literatures till now. In this paper, a constant-power soft-stall control strategy is proposed which claims to increase the electrical power of the generator to force the wind turbine work in the stall regime thus to decrease the power coefficient of the turbine and achieve constant power operation. The control strategy is based on neither the wind velocity nor the rotational speed of the turbine but the voltage and current signals of the DC bus. Consequently, the control cost is greatly reduced. To verify the correctness of proposed control strategy, both a simulation model based on Matlab/ Simulink and a laboratory prototype of a fixed-pitch variable-speed wind turbine with the power rating of 1.2kW are established. Simulation and experimental results support the theoretical analyses very well.
