Abstract:Centralized photovoltaic(PV)systems have different fault behaviors from distributed PV systems due to the differences in the structure and controls.This makes fault analysis and protection methods in distribution networks with distributed PV not suitable for centralized PV plants.Therefore,the widely-used current controllers under the double synchronous rotating frame(DSRF)are considered,as well as the characteristics of PV arrays,and then a consolidated expression for the fault current is calculated under different controls.Based on the analyzed fault current characteristics and the on-site short test data,the performance of current protection relays on 35 kV collection lines is evaluated within an 850 MW large-scale PV plant.The evaluation revealed that the overcurrent relays at the downstream side on overhead lines might malfunction and thus a new relay scheme is proposed using distance elements.In the PSCAD/EMTDC,an electromagnetic PV transient model in detail is built and verified using the on-site test data.Finally,considerable simulation results verified the proposed relay scheme.The research in this paper can help improve the protection performance within PV plants.
