Abstract:A new modular multilevel converter (MMC) with single arm inductor is proposed, and compared to the conventional MMC topology one arm inductor is saved per each phase. To this asymmetric converter, a control method is proposed. Taking the MMC without lower arm inductors for example, a virtual arm inductor voltage is added to the reference voltage of cascaded modules in lower arm to make the converter symmetrically operating. And combined to circulating current restraint algorithm, a complete control block diagram is presented. At last experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategies.
