Abstract This paper presents a sensorless control scheme for long stator linear synchronous motor (LSM) drive. The approach first estimates the motor back-EMF using a state observer based on the position differences between estimated and actual reference frame. With this back-EMF information, position error is derived via trigonometry function, then, mover position and speed information can be derived when compensating this error to zero. The algorithm is developed in IOWorks and verified in a VME bus controller. The experimental results show good estimation ability of the algorithm.
