Abstract A rotor position estimation method for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is researched utilizing carrier frequency component signal of PWM inverter. Three-phase triangular carrier SPWM modulation is adopted in the inverter. The rotor position is estimated by detecting envelope curves of the carrier frequency component currents (CFCC); the effects of the rotor position estimated error, such as the motor’s speed, DC bus voltage and the carrier frequency of inverter are analyzed. The experimental results show that the proposed method can estimate the rotor position precisely and the constructed sensorless vector control of IPMSM possesses acceptable static and dynamic performance. On this basis, the simulation and experimental results about the related influence factors of the rotor position estimated error verify the correctness of the theory analysis.
