Abstract Discharge will occur along the wet and polluted insulator surface and it will radiate the ultraviolet. In this paper, a method for contamination condition evaluation based on the solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) imaging is proposed. Firstly, the insulator discharge phenomenon under different pollution degrees and humidity in the artificial climate chamber is observed and researched. Furthermore, three characteristic parameters are extracted with video analysis and image processing algorithm, and the three parameters are as follows: the area of stable, intermittent UV facula, and the repetitions of intermittent UV facula. For the pollution discharge has certain randomness, and the extracted characteristic parameters based on video and image processing has fuzziness, then an the insulator contamination condition evaluation model is established with fuzzy logic inference method. Tests show that this model has relative high prediction accuracy and stability.
