Abstract The efficiency of flywheel electric machine reduced with the increase of speed because of high eddy loss of winding conductors which are completly exposed in the changing magnetic field. This paper deduces eddy loss model of circular-shaped conductor, and then established the calculating model of winding eddy loss. The loss model includes two parts: one is caused by radial field component, the other is caused by tangential field component. Both of the two field components can be obtained by resolving magnetostatic field of electric machine, or FEA (finite element analysis). According to the field component obtained by FEA, the winding eddy loss of a prototype is forecasted quickly by using the proposed model. Finally, a flywheel electric machine prototype is used to experiment validity, and the experimental results demonstrate the validity of relative theory.
