Abstract A new modular cascade machines (MCM) system which comprises unit machines like batteries is presented in this paper. Different power demands can be met by adjusting the number of machines, which will improve vehicle efficiency, enhance fault tolerance ability and reduce costs. Firstly, two matching methods, single-mode and multi-mode, are studied based on the application on vehicles, and the index of the motors is proposed. Secondly, the design & control of the modular machine are researched, and the optimal efficiency control strategy and fault-tolerant control strategy are put forward. Finally, the mechanical characteristics and efficiency of the motor is tested based on the FEA method, and the optimal efficiency & torque compensation control strategy of the motor is confirmed by computer simulation. The results show that this new MCM system can expand the high efficiency area, enhance fault tolerance capability, and reduce the R&D cost, as well as the maintenance cost.
