Abstract Multi-phase flywheel energy storage generator systems (FESGSs) are very promising in the future. This paper studies the design scheme and simulation model of a 12-phase flywheel energy storage generator system with linearly dynamic load based on a 12 kW 12-phase synchronous generator hardware system. The module functions of linearly dynamic load and excitation power amplifier are performed by a Buck circuit and full-bridge circuit, respectively. And an innovative controller integrating the algorithm of feedforward and feedback is adopted as the excitation controller module in the designed system. The system simulation model is built to test the design based on the EMTDC software, where the models of machine are obtained from secondary development with Fortran language in EMTDC environment. The simulation results show that all can be drawn from the simulation results. All the designed modules can fulfill their basic functions. The output power of linearly dynamic load increases at the expected speed. The control precision and response speed of the system are satisfactory. The system simulation model is exact and computationally efficient.
