Abstract Power converter is key of excellent operation for the switched reluctance (SR) motor, and also the weakest part of the whole system. All single-phase faults that possibly occur in the asymmetric bridge converter are analyzed via the nonlinear simulation model and experiments. Detailed discussions about the spectral component changes of the healthy and faulty currents are presented by FFT. The concept of relative spectral coefficient is given as a fault diagnosis eigenvalue, and its strong robusticity is shown by experiment results under different work conditions. At last, a variable angle fault-tolerant control strategy is proposed to decrease the braking torque from the faulty phase and enhance the system’s reliability. The validity of the proposed fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control is verified by experiments.
