Abstract The tension of conductor, which is related to its operating temperature and weather conditions is an important factor that determines its transfer capability and security operation. In this paper, the meteorological distribution along the overhead transmission lines is considered in electro-thermal coupling power flow calculation, and the inclined parabola state equation is utilized to calculate the temperatures and tensions of tensioning sections during the electro-thermal coupling process power flow calculation. By doing this, the distribution of temperature and tension of tensioning sections along the overhead lines under the anticipated operating scenarios of power systems can be predicted thus revealing the essential transfer capability of overhead lines. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is testified by case studies on a regional power grid.
