Abstract  Accurately predicting the core loss under non-sinusoidal voltage magnetization is essential for the optimal design of high-frequency (HF) transformers used in the bidirectional isolated DC-DC converter with dual active bridges (DABs). In this paper, the modified Steinmetz formulae and statistical loss model (STL) that relate the core loss with the magnetization frequency, peak magnetic flux density, and waveform parameters like duty cycle and rise time, are presented to determine the core loss under rectangular and trapezoidal voltage magnetization in typical of DAB DC-DC converters. The empirical parameters of Steinmetz equation and the fixed coefficients of STL are calculated by using a regression analysis and a limited set of measured loss data in sinusoidal flux for any peak magnetic flux density value. Calculated non-sinusoidal core losses for nanocrystalline, amorphous, MnZn ferrite, and 3% grain-oriented silicon steel are compared with the measurements.
