Abstract Recently, the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is widely used in air-conditioner DC compressor system, because of its advantages. Generally, the compressor driven by rectangular current has some demerits, such as large torque ripple, high noise and low efficiency. This paper presents the state observer for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) on the supposed rotational d-q frame of axes, the error between the supposed frame and the motor rotor d-q frame is diminished by phase-locked loop(PLL) controller; it also gives the method to locate the poles of the state observer, to design the current-loop controller and the speed-loop controller. Meanwhile, the anti-windup PI controller is used in the current and speed control to improve the system stability, and the maximum torque per amper (MTPA) strategy is used in the driving system of the DC compressor to increase its efficiency. Simulation and experiment proved that the proposed method is available in driving the air-conditioner DC compressor.
