Abstract A new inside-out nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensor is presented. This design combines three cylindrical magnets (poles opposed) which are magnetized in the axial direction, and the structure is compact. By adjusting the space between the cylinders, it was found that a radially symmetric homogeneous magnetic field or extended constant gradient can be obtained, and the orientation of the static magnetic field B₀ is parallel to the axis of the sensor. To generate a radio frequency field B₁ perpendicular to the static field B₀, a saddle coil was employed for the RF probe. The sensor is 2.8cm in diameter, 6cm in length and 200g in weight. This sensor is simple and the sensitive region is relatively big comparing to its size.
