Abstract Neutral-point-clamped(NPC) three-level inverter fed AC motor drives are widely used in many industrial applications, while high accuracy model is an indispensible design and analysis tool. The operational principle, modulation method and control strategy of the NPC three-level inverter fed induction motor drive system are discussed in detail, and a complete simulation model is established by using Matlab/Simulink. In the modeling process, some key issues, which influence the emulation accuracy, are taken into account, such as the switching transients of IGBT, the dead time setting in the space vector modulation and the no-load torque of induction motor. The simulated results by the developed model have been compared with the measurement results on the experimental prototype. The comparison results show that, the relative emulation errors of motor voltages and currents at the steady-state are less than 4%, the relative emulation error of the total harmonic distortion of the motor current is only 10.78%, and the relative emulation errors of the settling time of motor currents under load torque changes are less than 9%. These results demonstrate that the developed model has very high emulation accuracy and can be used as the important design and analysis tool for the practical applications of three-level inverter fed AC motor drives.
