Abstract The current rod-pumping system model mainly focused on machinery, such as behavior prediction of sucker rod and structure optimization of beam pumping unit(BPU). It is not suitable for accurate analysis of electrical energy consumption and energy-saving potential. To solve this problem, taking a CYJ10 BPU driven by a Y2—280S—8, 37kW induction motor as an example, the practical simulation model considering saturation of magnetic circuit and wave equation of sucker rod is established. With this model, comparative analysis on BPU system energy consumption with different running conditions are carried out. Furthermore, aiming at the common phenomena in oilfield nowadays, such as long power lines and various working fluid levels, the system energy-saving potential is estimated, without additional investment and replacement of equipment. It indicates that the energy- saving rate is 2.5% by regulating the transformer taps. With the counter weight balance about 95% position according to the industry standard, the system still own a certain energy-saving potential. If the traditional Y-∆ conversion and reactive power compensation technology are supplemented, the comprehensive energy-saving rate can reach up to 16.8%. The reliability and accuracy of model are verified through comparing with conventional beam pumping well(BPW) test.
