Abstract To improve the existing methods of paper modification and grasp the influence of Montmorillonite(MMT) and thermal stabilizer on the cellulose insulation paper’s thermal aging properties, MMT modified thermally-upgraded paper and ordinary paper are made, then the accelerated thermal aging test under 110℃ with oil-ordinary paper and oil-MMT modified terminally-upgraded paper are performed. The main parameters and their variation of the insulating paper and mineral oil during aging are recorded. The influence mechanism of additives on the aging characteristics of paper and oil is analyzed comprehensively. The research results show that, the joint action of MMT with amines, leads to the high breakdown strength and thermal stability properties of the modified paper. The modified paper does not adversely affect the performance of insulating oil, but breakdown voltage of the oil increases. It is verified by the test results that the amine compound reduce water and small molecule acid. And the nanoscale composite effect caused by the modified montmorillonite and cellulose may be the key reason of the higher breakdown voltage.
