Abstract The EDS maglev considered is mainly made up of linear PM Halbach arrays and conducting sheet as the guideway. Lift and drag forces of the EDS system result form interaction between eddy-current of conducting sheet and the PM magnetic fields. This paper establishes a simplified two-dimensional model, and studies the dynamic characteristic of the maglev, then deduces differential equations from Maxwell equations. On the basis of the equations, it obtains lift and drag forces and L/D expressions. In the end it presents comparisons among the analytical results and those from Ansoft and from experiment. This paper indicates that the two-dimensional model is applicable and the testing apparatus is also rationally designed. The analysis and test are necessary for further EDS maglev project.
