Abstract Aimed to the Stirling engine generator for accumulator charging, an excitation system is proposed, which works with Buck circuit as the power amplifier and works with speed as outer closed-loop and excitation current of the exciter generator as inner closed-loop. Controlled by the excitation system, the gas-engine generator is able to charging the accumulator with changeable power at the invariant speed. Based on the math function between the terminal voltage frequency and the generator’s speed, a method to calculate the generator’s speed is used. The terminal voltage is too small to be used to calculate the speed at the low speed stage, so a pre-excitation method is used to carry out the problem. The successful speed calculation method cuts the cost and shortens the axial-direction length of the generator since the gear and encoder can be omitted. Tests show that the excitation system of the gas-engine generator is of excellent steady speed regulation and dynamic performance.
