Abstract The working process of a single-switch quadratic buck converter in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is analyzed in this paper. A nonlinear control method, pulse train (PT) control, is used to control the converter in DCM, its steady-state and transient response characteristics are analyzed. The converter with PT control simplifies the controller design, and enjoys a wider voltage conversion ratios especially the fast transient response. Therefore, the converter in this paper is suitable for low output voltage and fast transient response application when the input voltage is high, such as automotive power systems.
