Abstract In permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive systems, the armature reaction plays an important role in the core magnetic saturation, that reduces the growth in the output torque as the torque current increase. It is revealed that the phenomenon stems from lack of a balance mechanism of the magnetic motive force in the air gap of PMSM. This paper proposes a novel PMSM with a quadrature axis field winding in its rotor. The field current is regulated to compensate armature reaction completely and therefore the air gap flux density can be maintained almost constant when the load changes. This PMSM based on armature reaction compensation removes the constraint of magnetic saturation on torque increasing, providing a new way to raise the torque density of PMSM. A prototype of the new type motor is designed and analyzed by finite element method. The torque and efficiency characteristics of the new type PMSM are compared with those of a conventional PMSM at different loads.
