Abstract In order to calculate the motor stator core loss of as non-sinusoidal power supply, and analyze the loss coefficients’ rules changed with frequency and magnetic flux density, this paper proposes an improved variable coefficient core loss calculation model. The model considers the influence of high order harmonics and skin effect brought by the non-sinusoidal power supply, and the iron loss coefficients’ variability due to the different fundamental frequencies of power supply. With the analysis of the characteristic parameters of the non-sinusoidal power supply voltage, calculate the total core loss with the fundamental supply voltage iron loss multiplied by the voltage characteristic parameters, and simplify the traditional method of decomposing the magnetic flux harmonics and superposing each harmonic iron loss together. By using this model, calculate the stator iron core loss of a motor supplied by an SPWM inverter, and compare the calculation results with the experiments. Comparison has shown that the relative error of the calculation results and the experiments are within the acceptable range, and the average relative error is less than 10%. The model has referenced significance for further study of the motor iron loss problem.
