Abstract A evaporative cooling power transformer with perfluorocarbon as coolant and dielectric is a new kind of power transmission and distribution equipment with smaller size, nonflammable and none plosive. While the perfluorocarbon used in the transformers is a new dielectric and it works under two-phase flow which differs from mineral oil, the monitoring and diagnostic method used for oil transformers is no longer suitable. To lay the foundation for safety operation and maintenance, as well as fault diagnosis, the decomposition products of fault conditions need to be analyzed. In this paper, decomposition products of perluorocarbon in a power arc have been analyzed by means of gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry(GC/MS) for identifying the decomposition products qualitatively and quantitatively. The amount of products formation rate vary with arc energy and arc current are studied. It is found that the formation rate is independent with arc energy, increase with arc current, however. Besides, the yield ratio nearly equal while arc energy and current change.
