Abstract This paper presents a unity control strategy based on sliding mode theory to control compensation current and voltage of DC side as a whole. There is hence no need to divide the system model which is developed in the synchronous dq reference frame into two separate loops. The modeling is based on the abc/dq transformation of the ac system variables. So a unity control strategy based on sliding mode theory is presented with the object of the minimal tracking error of compensation current and voltage of DC side, and the equivalent control is proven its existence theoretically. The conditions of its accessibility are also presented which means that the parameters ranges of accurate of sliding surface can be obtained. Simulation results show the validity of the performances considered theoretically for the compensations required by the shunt active filter.
