Abstract Given the characteristics of MW-level direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), a sensorless zero d-axis current control (ZDAC) method with rotor flux position observation based on U-I model is proposed. Its implementation principle is introduced in detail. Furthermore, double integrator with a saturable feedback based on coordinate transforming is discussed in depth. Finally, simulation and experimental results on a 2MW “back to back” PWM converter prototype indicate the feasibility of the method. Results also show its excellent steady and dynamic performance as well as easy implementation.
